ECS Computers Ltd started trading in 1983, selling and supporting the BBC Micro and related peripherals, which was very successful in introducing people to the new era of home computing. Manufactured by Acorn, and used by the BBC in their TV program “The Computer Programme” in 1982, the “BEEB” as it was affectionately known, became the standard micro for use in British schools.
The business grew and new premises were needed in 1986, when we moved to Austin Fields Industrial Estate. When IBM and Microsoft developed the IBM PC, with disk-based Operating System, ECS became an authorised IBM PC dealer for this area. We also started selling various brands of IBM compatible computers, including Tandon, Opus and finally Amstrad. The IBM PC was now considered the best platform for running Accounts Software, and ECS became an Authorised dealer for Pegasus Accounts Software.
Sales of PC’s had now grown to a level where we needed more showroom space, and in 1990, we moved to our present building, which was originally a Barclays Bank. Soon we took the decision to assemble our own PC’s , as the level of service offered by manufacturers was totally inadequate for most of our customers. We realised that the only way we could offer a high level of after-sales service was by controlling the quality and availability of the components used on our ECHO PC’s. This policy has continued ever since, and is the reason the company succeeds, while many of our competitors of the 1990’s failed.
Today, ECS provides a wide range of services, and have built an enviable reputation for quality and is the preferred supplier to many local business and home computer users. As always, attention to detail and complete after-sales service, including maintenance, repairs and software support is provided as standard with every sale.
